Meet the Owner Behind Our Bakery

Our Owner’s Story


Channa Johnson

“As a young child, I loved the aroma of freshly baked bread, cakes, and cookies. I used to be my grandmother’s mixer and my reward was that I got to lick the spoon. When I grew up, I went on to work in several ethnic bakeries including an Italian bakery, a Greek diner/bakery, a German Bäckerei, and a Jewish bakeshop.

Eventually, I became more interested in the science of cooking and baking. My desire to learn the trade became more serious, and I joined the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago to follow my passion.

This opened many doors to a career working with artfully crafted food, and it led me to Napa Valley, California, where I attended the Culinary Institute of America. After some time, I headed back to Chicago and attended the French Baking Pastry School to round out my culinary education.

My career in the culinary arts has enabled me to work alongside some of the world’s top culinary and pastry chefs. This experience led me to envision HerBakery. From my oven to your table, I want to thank you for joining me on this sweet journey.”
